Baystate Department of Anesthesiology Basic POCUS Point of Care Ultrasound Scanning Workshop

Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:

  1. Describe the roles of the members of the health care team in their respective responsibilities for quality care.
  2. Identify the gastric antrum on ultrasound scan and name relevant targeted structures for correct gastric antrum measurements.
  3. Estimate qualitative and quantitative measurement of gastric content ultrasound scan for fasted and nonfasted states.
  4. Identify where to place the ultrasound transducer for the four positions of the FAST protocol.
  5. Describe how to determine if free fluid is present in the abdominal cavity.
  6. Name the nerves to be blocked to facilitate an awake intubation.
  7. Localize the cricothyroid membrane in the transverse and longitudinal views of the airway sonographic exam.
  8. Describe how to identify an endotracheal tube that is misplaced in the esophagus.
  9. Identify liver and diaphragm on lower right side of the thorax; and the spleen and diaphragm on lower left side of the thorax.
  10. Recognize “CURTAIN” sign on inspiration during ultrasound lung exam.
  11. Describe the sonographic “BAT” sign used for lung scanning in focused lung ultrasound.
  12. Describe how to obtain the 6 basic FATE views including inferior vena cava and pleura.
  13. Discuss the use of “Eye-balling” for assessment of right and left ventricular function.
  14. Recognize the role of BASIC FATE exam for patient optimization in the perioperative clinical setting as a general anesthesiologist.
  15. Demonstrate the use of M-Mode ultrasound for assessment of cardiac function including MAPSE, TAPSE, FS, and MSS.
  16. List the pertinent clinical information one can obtain for patient assessment at each of the 6 basic FATE views.
