Every parent deserves the opportunity to breastfeed – even if that parent did not birth their baby.  And as professionals, it is important to recognize that these parents will come to us with some unique needs and circumstances.  They are likely to have health histories that are different than gestational parents.  They may have difficult feelings about their path to parenthood or about their gender identity. The timing of their baby’s arrival may be unknown until weeks or days beforehand.  They may be sharing the nursing role with a partner.  They can expect to need to supplement their milk production.  And of course, they won’t have the hormones of pregnancy to initiate lactation.  Understanding as best we can the unique needs of these extraordinary parents can go a long way towards being an inclusive lactation practice.

Target Audience

This course is designed for nurses in the following practice settings: OB/GYN, maternal child, pediatrics, neonatal intensive care unit/critical care nursery, postpartum, LDRP, newborn nursery, infants and children’s unit; visiting nurses caring for mother/baby dyads, doulas, mid-wives, WIC counselors, La Leche League leaders, physicians in the following specialties: (pediatricians, OB/GYN, family practice, nurse practitioners, resident physicians in medicine-pediatrics, pediatrics, and obstetrics/gynecology); parent educators, childbirth and breastfeeding instructors, lactation consultants, lactation counselors. The audience was determined based upon their proximity to the care of healthy and sick mother/baby dyads.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the unique needs of adoptive parents who are inducing lactation.
  2. Describe the unique needs of intended parents who are inducing lactation.
  3. Describe the unique needs of foster parents who are inducing lactation.
  4. Describe the unique needs of the partner of the birthing parent who is inducing lactation.
  5. Describe the unique needs of trans female parents who are inducing lactation.
  6. Describe the unique needs of cis-male parents who are inducing lactation.
  7. Support any of these parents who may choose to breastfeed/chestfeed without lactation.
  8. Describe the unique needs individuals inducing lactation for reasons other than to feed and nurture their child: adult nursing relationships, milk donation, or post weaning depression or anxiety.
