COPD Learning Collaborative Self-Paced Champion Training

This training will focus on COPD best practices, noninvasive ventilation (NIV) use for COPD patients, and interprofessional training for clinicians treating COPD patients. The NIV training will cover patient selection, monitoring, and weaning to reduce NIV failure and improve patient outcomes. Interprofessional training will provide skills to create and strengthen teamwork when treating COPD patients. Case studies will reinforce the best practices for COPD, proper delivery of NIV, and provide a practice of interprofessional teamwork skills. At the end of the session, we will cover how to be a Champion to encourage peers to attend a training session, implement the COPD and NIV knowledge, and teamwork skills learned in training at your hospital..

Dr. Victor Pinto-Plata will present on COPD best practices, and Dr. Nicholas Hill will present on NIV use for COPD patients. Dr. Mary Jo Farmer Ph.D.; Dr. Steingrub; Dean Hess, RRT, Ph.D., FAARC; Helen Scoville, RRT; and Christine Callahan RN, MS will present an Algorithm for COPD exacerbations and review NIV machines and settings. Dr. Mihaela Stefan Ph.D., and Ashely Hughes, Ph.D. will present on teamwork and interprofessional competencies and Christopher Shea Ph.D. will present on being a Champion at your home. 

Target Audience

This training is for respiratory therapist, physicians, and nurses.

Learning Objectives

1. Recognize the key evidence-based interventions for the management of patients with COPD.

2. Understand how to initiate and use NIV properly with patients experiencing a COPD exacerbation-includes patient selection and NIV machine settings adjustment.

3. Develop an understanding of clinician roles in order to appreciate and respect the team members (RTs, MDs, and RNs) involved in treating patients with COPD.

4. Identify strategies that will reduce adverse events and increase patient safety while using NIV (patient safety).

5. Review key practices for communication with patients while using NIV.
