Nursing Care for the Patient on NIV

This training will focus on the nursing care for patients being treated with noninvasive respiratory support strategies including continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or non-invasive ventilation for patients with acute respiratory failure.   

This training will be primarily conducted by Mrs. Callahan and will focus on the benefit, use, and nursing strategies to improve patient care outcomes for patients being treated with non-invasive ventilation.  Mr. Korobkov will describe the function of the NIV device and enhance the learners’ confidence in interpreting what the device is delivering in terms of inspiratory/expiratory force, oxygen and when to call for respiratory team support.

Target Audience

This training is for nurses, respiratory therapists, and physicians.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe the purpose of Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) to benefit patient outcomes.

2. Describe patient care scenarios in which NIV can be helpful

3. Describe the nursing role in support of the patient receiving NIV.

4. Identify key points essential for patient safety with NIV

5. Explain aspects of teamwork and collaborative practice in caring for a patient requiring NIV.
