Management of Chronic Hypercapneic Respiratory Failure with Non-Invasive Ventilation after Hospitalization:Role of Inpatient Sleep Medicine

This training will be conducted by. Dr. Karin Johnson.

Dr. Karin Johnson is the Director of Baystate Sleep Medicine Regional Sleep Program, Associate Professor at UMMS-Baystate and Sleep Section Chair of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine Inpatient Guideline Task Force.

The program will review causes and consequences of chronic hypercapneic respiratory failure.  program will review the effect of  sleep on breathing and ventilation and the evidence for treatment with noninvasive ventilation (NIV).  Finally the program will review how different causes of hypercapneic respiratory failure affect NIV selection and how inpatient sleep testing can be used to help optimize therapy and qualify patients for treatment after discharge. 

Target Audience

This training is for nurses, respiratory therapists, and physicians.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe causes of chronic hypercapneic respiratory failure and effect of sleep of breathing

2.  Understand the evidence  for NIV treatment of chronic hypercapneic respiratory failure

3.  Explain how to optimize NIV mode and settings based on cause of CHRF

4.  State the pros and cons of ​Inpatient Sleep Testing
