Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:
1|Identify the conditions for a good death described by Zaman et al. (2021), such as symptom relief, autonomy in treatment decisions, and not prolonging life unnecessarily. Participants should also be able to judge which of these were met for a patient with serious mental illness under guardianship.
2|Describe what palliative care can do in psychiatry, including Trachsel et al.'s definition of palliative psychiatry. A palliative approach can run alongside disease-modifying treatment like ECT and is not a replacement for active care.
3|Recognize what keeps psychiatric patients from getting palliative care in a consistent way. Reasons include no agreed definition of futility, care models that weren't built with SMI in mind, little training for either psychiatrists or palliative care teams, and legal hurdles around decisions made by guardians.
