Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:
1| Describe the historical and legal origins of decisional capacity and explain how key assumptions embedded in early consent doctrine have been obscured in contemporary clinical practice.
2| Identify how prevailing cognitive-centric approaches to capacity assessment create systematic risks for bias—particularly in cases of refusal, disagreement, or culturally discordant values.
3| Compare traditional capacity frameworks with alternative models, including values-based approaches, and apply these models to reframe complex clinical cases involving refusal or nonconforming decision
