Dr. William B. and Gertrude F. Coen Lecture Day
Dr. William B. and Gertrude F. Coen Lecture Day honors Baystate Health physician William B. Coen, MD, his wife Gertrude, and their belief in the importance of working compassionately with patients and their families. William B. Coen was a physician who worked at Wesson Memorial Hospital and participated in the merger of the Wesson and Springfield Hospitals. His relationship with Baystate was multifaceted. He exemplified the old-fashioned ethic of how doctors dealt with patients, and when he became a patient himself, he was shocked by what he witnessed and experienced from physicians and how they behaved with patients. This lecture gave them an opportunity to fund an educational program that helps impart such skills and the value of working compassionately with the patient and their family. This specially named grand rounds lecture supports the education of medical students, interns, residents, physicians, and other team members to improve patient relations and communication.
 
 
Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:
1| Define the philosophical terms of Heteronomy, paternalism, autonomy and beneficence and how these apply to our daily practice. 
2| Discuss techniques of communication that influence our ability to build trust and aide in decision making. 
3| Examine difficult conversations to establish clarity of our patients' goals as we understand their care needs related to their unique situation.
