Understanding how to accurately bill and code for services provided by APPs is critical in providing care in a cost-effective and efficient medical manner. Billing and coding are impacted by federal laws and statutes, state regulations including Medicaid and/or Nurse Practice Act/Medical Practice Act, insurance provider contracts, hospital credentialing/privileging, and the unique needs of the APP practice. Both the physician and the APP’s must stay current with practice guidelines and ongoing changes. Through continued audits by the compliance department, an APP knowledge deficit was identified by the APPs in understanding and appropriate coding and billing for services provided.
