Series Overview

A psychiatric nurse from BMC's Adult Psychiatric Treatment Unit (APTU) will provide care strategies for psychiatric patients that are on medical-surgical acute care units. Topics will include identifying environmental hazards for psychiatric patients, common scenarios and types of psychiatric patients encountered in medical-surgical areas, as well as discussion of specific interventions that can effectively increase rapport, communication, and the standard of care of these types of patients on medical surgical units.

As a result of participation in this educational series, Nursing team members caring for psychiatric patients in a non-psychiatric setting will demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to become more confident and competent care providers of this population of patients. By utilizing resources and tools provided in class, non-verbal and verbal communication will be practiced, leading to a safer environment for patients and staff.
