Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:
1| Define the essential components of a complete preoperative history and physical examination for patients undergoing noncardiac surgery
2| Identify patient-specific clinical factors that increase perioperative risk; including cardiovascular disease, functional limitation, frailty, and major comorbid conditions.
3| Select the most appropriate risk calculator based on the planned procedure, patient characteristics, and the outcome being estimated, such as cardiac events, overall complications, or mortality
4| Explain the purpose, strengths, and limitations of commonly used perioperative risk calculators, including the Revised Cardiac Risk Index and ACS NSQIP Surgical Risk Calculator
5| Interpret calculator outputs accurately and distinguish estimated risk from absolute clinical decision thresholds
6|Translate calculated risk into practical recommendations for optimization, testing, perioperative medication planning, postoperative monitoring, and specialty referral when indicated.
7|Document and communicate preoperative risk clearly so that patients, surgeons, anesthesiologists, and care teams can use the results in shared decision-making and informed consent.
