CMS Requirements for Restraint
Overview
This brief, on-demand training reviews CMS and institutional requirements for ordering and documenting the use of violent self-destructive (VSD) and non-violent non-self-destructive (NVNSD) restraints. Providers will learn critical timeframes, documentation standards, and steps to ensure compliance with regulatory expectations. Completion of this course is mandatory for all providers who may order restraints.
Target Audience
Physicians, Nurses, Advance Practitioners, Residents and all providers who may order restraints.
Learning Objectives
As a result of participation in this educational activity, members of the healthcare team will be able to:
- Summarize the different policies relating to restraints, including orders, documentation, monitoring, and renewal/reevaluations.
- Recognize the different types of restraints (physical, chemical, holds) and seclusion, including least restrictive vs most restrictive.
- Maintain patient safety and dignity when using restraints.
