The First Response for Veterans: Crisis Intervention and Supporting the Unique Health Care Needs of our Veterans

Goal:
The goal of the symposium is to build the capacity of our region's emergency personnel, first responders and mental health workforce to better serve our returning veterans and their families.

Target Audience
This course is designed for EMS, emergency department, first responders, physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, mental health providers, VSOs and veterans
Learning Objectives
• | Describe how to identify a veteran in crisis. |
• | Discuss what considerations to take into account when responding to a veteran in crisis. |
• | Describe how to approach a veteran in crisis. |
• | Describe de-escalation techniques. |
• | Discuss available resources for First Responders. |
• | Improve the engagement and experience of veterans in crisis. |
• | Understand post deployment issues facing returning veterans, specifically PTSD. |
• | Describe unique considerations for responding to a veteran in mental health crisis. |
• | List up to 3 combat ‘BATTLEMIND’ attributes and discuss ways these attributes may manifest when the veteran returns home. |
• | Give examples of at least 2 transitional issues for returning Vets that may influence their mental health and result in a crisis situation. |
• | Briefly describe available local/state/federal/non-profit Veteran-related community resources, including the MA Dept. of Veterans’ Services SAVE Team. |
• | Discuss general facts about suicide. |
• | Identify a veteran that may be at risk for suicide. |
• | Describe the resources available for a veteran at risk for suicide. |
• | Discuss how to access available resources when in a crisis situation. |
• | Understanding the causality and linking of battlefield exposures to health outcomes in Veterans. |
• | Recognize the environmental health hazards associated with military service. |
• | Determine the key medical and deployment history factors for military veterans in providing accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment. |
• | Discuss self-report assessment tools to assist in PTSD screening. |
• | Describe to patients the availability of two evidence-based treatments for PTSD. |
• | Understand the unique program aspects that Home Base offers to veterans, service members and their families. |
• | Understand the importance of having veterans in your care and asking the right questions in determining appropriate health considerations. |
• | Discuss the initiative in western Massachusetts for establishing an intake process for quickly identifying veterans in your care as well as resources available and the support needed for such a process. |
• | Identify specific resources to help veterans and families who are transitioning from military service to civilian life. |
• | Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of local, state and federal points of contact in properly referring veterans and their families members for health care and mental health counseling and services. |
