2025 Nursing: Basic Principles of CRRT

Overview

This beginner course will prepare nurses to provide continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) to critically ill patients using the Baxter PrisMax technology. Nurses will learn about the science behind hemodialysis and hemofiltration, regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA) and receive hands-on training with the technology.

Learning Objectives

After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:

  1. List the difference between continuous hemofiltration and continuous hemodialysis.
  2. Describe the difference between diffusion and convection and state which molecules are cleared with each.
  3. Apply the settings on the PrisMax operational screen controls (PBP, BFR, PFR, Dialysate, and Replacement Fluid).
  4. Demonstrate the initial setup of the PrisMax circuit in CVVHDF mode, including setup of the auto effluent accessory.
  5. Demonstrate the steps to return the patient’s blood and place the system to recirculate saline.
  6. Demonstrate navigation of the operational screen and appropriate adjustment of the deaeration chamber.
  7. Compare patient pressure graphs to identify trends indicative of clotting or clogging.
  8. Assess pressure values and distinguish between clogging and clotting.
  9. Identify alarms and follow the on-screen steps to resolve them.
  10. State the effect that citrate has on blood calcium and the indication for RCA use with CRRT.
