Goal:

The goal of this educational activity is to update clinicians and other healthcare providers in Western Massachusetts on new developments in the field of infectious diseases.

Baystate Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases Division and Baystate Continuing Interprofessional Education.

Target Audience

This course is designed for healthcare professionals including physicians, advanced practitioners, infection control practitioners,physician assistants, case managers, nurses, pharmacists and laboratory personnel.

Learning Objectives

1|Summarize the mode of action of mRNA vaccines.
2|Describe the key findings from COVID-19 vaccine clinical trials.
3|Discuss what is known about the use of the vaccine among those with special conditions, including pregnancy, lactation, and immune compromise.
4|Explain the conditions where antibiotics are not to be prescribed.
5|Describe the potential harms of antibiotics.
6|Discuss alternative therapies to antibiotics in these conditions.
7|Discuss the current evidence and rationale for COVID-19 antiviral therapy.
8|Discuss the current evidence and rationale for COVID-19 anti-inflammatory therapy.
9|Explain current recommendations/guidelines for the treatment of acute COVID.
10|Summarize commonly seen zoonotic diseases seen in the Northeast US (Lyme disease, tularemia, giardia, Anaplasma, among others).
11|Discuss animals that transmit them and where they are usually found.
12|Discuss the typical presentation of these diseases and the most common season they are observed.
13|Discuss the available treatment for these zoonotic diseases and monitoring patients would need.
14|Describe the use of long-acting ART in patients with HIV, and review HIV-1 & HIV-2 superinfection
15|Explain the role of compression therapy for recurrent cellulitis
16|Summarize the coverage and role of new antibiotic Omadacycline 
17|Explain the lack of relationship between vaccines and autism.
18|Discuss vaccine risks and benefits.
19|Describe the visual presentation of acute Lyme infection.
20|Give examples of the clinical manifestations of POST ACUTE COVID-19 syndrome.
21|Describe potential mechanisms for the POST ACUTE COVID-19 syndrome.
22|Discuss potential treatment for POST COVID syndrome.
