Goal:

The goal of this educational activity is to update clinicians and other healthcare providers in Western Massachusetts on new developments in the field of infectious diseases.

Baystate Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases Division and Baystate Continuing Interprofessional Education.

Target Audience

This course is designed for healthcare professionals including physicians, advanced practitioners, infection control practitioners,physician assistants, case managers,nurses,pharmacists and laboratory personnel.

Learning Objectives

 

  • Review the evidence on the etiologies of autism and lack of interaction with vaccines.
  • Review the evidence on type 1 narcolepsy occurrence after pandemic influenza vaccination.
  • Discuss the longstanding changes that transient infections can have.
  •  Discuss common conditions where antibiotics are misused or overprescribed
  • Review how to avoid over-prescription of antibiotics in those conditions
  • Describe malaria epidemiology, prophylaxis, and treatment
  • Review common travel-related vaccines and their indications
  • Describe other pre-travel counseling needed for safe travel
  • Review commonly seen zoonotic diseases seen in the Northeast US (Lyme disease, tularemia, giardia, Anaplasma, among others)
  • Briefly discuss animals that transmit zoonotic diseases and where they are usually found
  • Discuss typical presentation of these diseases and most common season they are observed
  • Review the available treatment for zoonotic diseases and the monitoring patients would need.
  • Review the latest recommendations and medications for HIV prevention.
  • Review the latest data on the impact of comorbid conditions, in patients with HIV.
  • Review the current guidelines for initial treatment for patients with HIV.
  • Discuss screening for STDs and why it is important
  • Discuss local trends in common STDs
  • Discuss how to enhance STD screening in your practice
  • Review recent literature regarding infection control and prevention including respiratory viral infections
  • Review recent literature regarding outpatient antibiotic stewardship
