Goal:

The 50th Annual Samuel D. Plotkin Symposium is a conference that demonstrates the importance of a comprehensive cardiology program encompassing patient care, education, and research that would benefit the Western Massachusetts community.

Target Audience

This course is designed for cardiologists, hospitalists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, emergency medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses and cardiovascular technologist.

  • Describe quality metric in cardiovascular care
  • Describe the value of humanities in the practice of medicine
  • Comprehend the connection between present and the past in medicine
  • Discuss the connection between an operation and a musical score
  • Describe historical classifications of Aortic Dissections: DeBakey vs Stanford
  • Describe historical treatment options
  • Describe current treatment options: Medical and Surgical
  • Discuss indications for Surgical Repair
  • Describe what are the stage of AKI
  • Explain what is the long term sequellae
  • Identify what are potential preventative techniques following cardiac surgery
  •  Discuss how can we use biomarkers to reduce AKI
  • Review tools for assessment of stroke and bleeding risk in patients with atrial fibrillation
  • Discuss anticoagulation therapy for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation
  • Evaluate appropriateness of left atrial appendage closure in patients with contraindications to anticoagulation
  • Discuss the role of Shared Decision-Making in patient-centered communication
  • Perform the steps of effective Shared Decision-Making
  • Discuss the nuances of SDM in different settings
  • Discuss clinical selection for LAAO closure
  • Explain Anatomical selection
  • Discuss the basics of heart failure and how congestion plays a role in the disease process
  • Analyze how CardioMEMS can help manage congestion, improve quality of life, and reduce hospitalizations
  • Discuss the presentation, classification and treatment of ascending aortic dissections
