Goal: 

The goal of this educational activity is to provide an opportunity for a multidisciplinary learning environment to update best practices on important cardiovascular topics in order to improve the armamentarium of all providers with evidence based, up to date guidelines on treating complex cardiovascular patients.

Target Audience

This course was designed for cardiologists, hospitalists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, emergency medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, and cardiovascular technologists.

After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:  

  • Learn about the risk factors for a surgical site infection (SSIs) associated with cardiac surgery and how healthcare providers can work with patients to reduce modifiable SSI risks.
  • Learn about evidence-based strategies to mitigate surgical site infections associated with cardiac surgery
  • Implement evidence-based best practices to reduce surgical site infection following cardiac surgery.
  • Review aneurysms, risk factors for development and anatomic classification.
  • Define and understand aneurysm diameter and understand surveillance protocols.
  • Explore aortic aneurysm surgical treatment modalities and exciting advances in complex endovascular aneurysm repair  
  • Recognize the importance of cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention. 
  • Demonstrate the importance of Phase 1 cardiac rehabilitation liaison. 
  • Develop regional stakeholder support and build upon strengths. 
  • Implement key performance indicators and closed loop communication system. 
  • Analyze and communicate results as part of a Plan, Do, Study, Act (PDSA) cycle.
  • Describe the challenges and success of starting an inpatient smoking cessation service at Baystate. 
  • Provide a general overview of H&V programmatic offerings at BMC.
  • Discuss novel modalities for optimal implementation of goal-directed medical therapy for heart failure with reduced ejection fraction in the outpatient setting. 
  • Describe the impact of rheumatic heart disease on the population of Rwanda.  
  • Discuss current definitions and classifications for PH. 
  • Discuss controversial aspects of these newer definitions.  
  • Discuss new treatments.  
  • Incorporate knowledge, skills, and values that relate to cardiovascular medicine.
  • Acknowledge updates on best current practices, evolving technologies, and treatment algorithms.
  • Increased understanding of cardiovascular disease processes among participating healthcare providers.
  • Increased competency in medical knowledge, patient and procedural skills, and roles/responsibilities.
  • Increased competency in Interprofessional communication and values/ethics for interprofessional practice.
  • Employ evidence-based practice.
  • Apply quality improvement.
  • Describe the classification of the PH subgroups.
  • Identify newer definitions of PH.
  • Determine when to refer a patient with suspected PH.
  • Describe new treatments for PH.
