Goal:

The goal of the Baystate Health Harm Reduction Symposium is to provide an update on the state of substance use disorder in western Massachusetts, as well as offer novel harm reduction principles, treatments and resources that can be easily incorporated into clinical practice.

Target Audience

This course is designed for all healthcare providers, including physicians, pharmacists,  advanced practitioners, nurses, social workers,  mental health counselors, psychologists and staff, both inpatient and outpatient in Western Massachusetts. 

Learning Objectives

 

  • Identify substance use disorder as a chronic disease process.
  • Describe the disproportionate impact of substance use disorder on racial and ethnic minority populations.
  • Discuss the impact of words and beliefs for our patients with substance use disorders.
  • Connect with patients with substance use disorder and family members as they share their experience with the healthcare system.
  • Identify harm reduction techniques that can be incorporated into everyday practice.
  • Describe ways to improve the hospital/outpatient experience for inpatients with substance use disorder.
  • Discuss common challenges in treating hospitalized patients with substance use disorder through case-based scenarios.
  • Identify the unique challenges facing the pregnant patient with substance use disorder.
  • Distinguish available treatment resources for patients with substance use disorder.
  • Discuss challenges to incorporating a harm reduction model into clinical practice.
