ELNEC Pediatric Palliative Care Training

March 5 & 6, 2021 - This is a 2 day course and both days require attendance to claim credit

Goal:

This course will prepare members of the multidisciplinary team to provide a high quality of care for infants/children and their families that are facing or at high risk of facing life limiting conditions.

 

 

Target Audience

This course is designed for physicians, nurses, social workers, child life specialist, spiritual services, music therapist, art therapist

 

 

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe the philosophy and principles of hospice and palliative care that can be integrated across settings to affect quality pediatric care.
  2. Identify changes in society, healthcare economics, and service delivery that necessitate improved professional preparation for palliative care. 
  3. Discuss unique aspects of suffering for children and families facing a life-threatening illness or event. 
  4. Discuss cases in which perinatal or neonatal palliative care may be beneficial
  5. Describe unique characteristics of neonatal palliative care and strategies to overcome challenges.
  6. Summarize three aspects of excellent ongoing communication with the interdisciplinary team, the child, and the family throughout palliative care.
  7. Explain ethical issues and dilemmas that may arise in palliative care for children.
  8. Identify barriers to adequate pain relief in palliative care and list components of a thorough pain assessment.
  9. Discuss cultural and spiritual factors which may affect the ability to communicate effectively with patients and families facing the end of life.
  10. Describe assessment of symptoms and interventions that can prevent or diminish symptoms.
  11. Identify physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs and interventions for an imminently dying child and his/her/their family. 
  12. Provided three interventions that may be appropriate to facilitate the grief process.
  13. Define personal death awareness and cumulative loss associated with professional caregiving.
