Nursing - Perianesthesia 101 (March)
Overview
Surgical Services Perianesthesia has developed a course to grow and enhance the understanding of Perianesthesia Nursing at Baystate Medical Center following the guidelines of the American Society of Perianesthesia Nurses (ASPAN). This course aims to improves your practice and foster a better working knowledge of the nursing specialty.

Learning Objectives
After participating in this educational activity, attendees should be able to:
1. Demonstrate appropriate assessment and management of the surgical patient prior to anesthesia/surgery on the day of surgery to proceed through the perioperative continuum of care safely, efficiently, and comfortably.
2. Demonstrate understanding of knowledge necessary to provide safe care of the perianesthesia patient including staffing ratios, communication, documentation, phases of anesthesia recovery, airway management, hemodynamic management, thermoregulation, and postoperative complications.
3. Demonstrate knowledge on purpose and effects of anesthesia agents including inhalation agents, neuromuscular blockade, peripheral nerve blocks, and regional and local anesthesia on the perianesthesia patient.
4. Define multimodal pain management, integrative strategies/complementary alternative therapies, and interventional pain therapies used in the perianesthesia setting.
5. Provide pertinent pre/postanesthesia and pre/post-procedural education and training to the patient and the responsible individual or caregiver per surgeon, anesthesia, and/or facility policy utilizing a comprehensive and working knowledge of the teaching/learning process.
