Target Audience
This course is designed for physicians, nurses, advanced practice nurses and others responsible for the medical care of adolescents.
Goal
The goal of this educational activity is to support safe, effective, patient-centered, timely, efficient, equitable and compassionate care.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize the imporatnce of caring for adolescents with chronic medical conditions in the primary care office.
- Describe an evidence-based approach to pain management.
- Identify the appropriate work-up for adolescents with chronic pain syndrome.
- Summarize the pathophysiology of chronic pain.
- Identify the high-risk adolescent patient with syncope.
- Manage an adolescent patient with non-cardiogenic syncope.
- Recognize and evaluate a patient with non-cardiogenic syncope.
- Develop a treatment plan for dysmenorrhea, acne and abnormal uterine bleeding.
- Discuss the contraindications for use of hormonal contraceptives in adolescents.
- Manage dysmenorrhea, acne and abnormal uterine bleeding with hormonal contraceptives.
- Describe the rates of comorbid conditions associated with childhood obesity.
- Develop a grid of disease specific tests to do in children who are obese.
- Identify basic management of the co-morbid conditions associated with childhood obesity.
