Goal: 

The goal of this educational activity is to provide an opportunity for a multidisciplinary learning environment to update best practices on important cardiovascular topics in order to improve the armamentarium of all providers with evidence based, up to date guidelines on treating complex cardiovascular patients.

Target Audience

This course was designed for cardiologists, hospitalists, primary care physicians, physician assistants, emergency medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses.

  • Identify the important history and physical exam findings in PAD.
  • Describe the initial workup and management for a patient with PAD.
  • Recognize some of the indications for invasive management of PAD.

  • Review of the indications and alternative approaches to repair congenital heart defects in adults: percutaneous vs open surgery.
  • Discuss the short and long term prognosis of adults with CHD.

Advance Heart Failure – Pablo Quintero, MD

ECMO/ELSO – Sophia Moriarty, BSN, RN

  • Discuss the role of simulation-based training in replicating real-world patient deterioration to improve recognition of patients who may be candidates for ECMO support.
  • Explain how simulation of time-sensitive clinical scenarios reinforces timely escalation, team communication, and appropriate activation of ECMO pathways.

Quality and Safety – Harry Hoar III, MD

  • Describe the impact of Patient Safety Indicators (PSIs) on Leapfrog Grades and CMS star ratings.
  • Discuss the cardiovascular service line’s current performance in PSIs.
  • Describe ongoing efforts to improve PSI performance.
